Cosmic Forms: Artist Kate Murdoch Finds Order in Nature’s Chaos at fortyfivedownstairs

MELBOURNE, VIC — Melbourne artist Kate Murdoch will present her fourth solo exhibition, Cosmic Forms, at fortyfivedownstairs from 22 September to 3 October 2026. The exhibition offers a profound visual exploration of how the mathematical symmetry of nature grounds humanity within a chaotic universe.

Murdoch’s practice serves as a personal means of self-connection through the symmetry and beauty of natural forms. By distilling botanical structures to their pure essence, she visualises order within a disordered world.

Influenced by the study of biocosmology, Cosmic Forms investigates how life’s ability to create and maintain order interacts with cosmic chaos. The intricate geometry within Murdoch's botanical works offers insight into the universal principles governing our reality, illustrating that the universe is an organized, interconnected system rather than an arbitrary collection of matter.

"The works in this collection can be seen simply as meditations on order within disorder," says Murdoch. "Yet they also examine our deep interconnectedness with all living things—from plants, to animals, to each other."

The public is invited to celebrate the official opening of the exhibition on Tuesday, 22 September, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
